Yay Jesus, Boo Youth Ministers
I blame the youth ministers.
They got all the young people together and told them what was the actual truth. We have to be sold out for God.
Sins: Drinking, partying, sex.
Non-sins: Going to church and taking a bold stand for God.
That was the basic message. At least this is as much as I can recall. Now, we’re expected to take this message out to the world.
“We don’t drink, party, or have sex because that’s what Jesus said not to do. You should go to church, like me. Check it out, I’m bold,” was the basic message. Forget what the old people tell you. This will work.
Will it? I always asked myself this. What has worked for 2000+ years is wrong? Ok, groovy youth minister, I trust you.
The basic misinterpretation is the word bold. What does being bold entail? Does it mean standing on a street corner blasting the Word of God? Perhaps it does. However, it could also mean unequivocally standing by your beliefs when they’re called into question.
No one enjoys the dogma Christians exude. Can we all be the same level of bold? No, and this is another fault of the youth ministers.
“He said he didn’t wanna put red tape over his mouth to prove he’s against abortion. Watch out for that guy.”
Is it wrong to not be rhetorically pro-life? Is it ok to believe certain things without displaying arrogance?
The louder the music, the closer some people get to God. I never felt that way. Music is just music.
“That guy said that he didn’t like the music tonight, but I really felt like God was speaking to me. Is he a Christian?”
Stripped down, yes, this is the attitude people have. If Chris Tomlin gets you closer to God than Fanny Crosby, there has to be something wrong with YOU. Are they both not proclaiming the message of God? Sure, Chris Tomlin may sound cooler, but THAT’S why you feel closer to God. Your emotions are racing.
I don’t like Sarah Palin. I’m sure she’s a nice person, but I don’t have to support her run for the presidency in order to be a Christian. I listen to non-Christian music. I thought Pineapple Express was funny.
I have had my beliefs questioned pretty seriously as of lately. I think I’ll come on the truthful end of it. I hate it that there are people out there that tried being the person the youth ministers molded us to be that now have no interest in church at all. They have every right not to come. I hate it that that’s the reason, though. Maybe something will give. I hope we all find the truth.
